But before we dive into it, here are some valuable tips for businesses that are confused about how to build their online presence through social media.
Is Social Media the New Search Engine?
Many people now use social media instead of Google to discover products, read reviews, and find local businesses. If your social media presence isn’t strong, you could be missing out on potential customers.
The Importance of a Strong Social Media Presence
You know your business needs to be on social media, but effectiveness depends on how well you use it. Be sure to seek help when you need it for your social media efforts.
Choose the Right Platforms
With so many platforms available, it can be overwhelming to choose where to focus. It’s not just about Facebook and Instagram anymore in Singapore. Picking the right platforms for your audience ensures you use your time wisely. For example, younger audiences are more active on TikTok and Lemon8. I recommend starting with the Big Three: Facebook, Instagram, and Lemon8.
Create a Content Calendar
Planning your content in advance helps maintain a consistent and engaging presence. Use a calendar to schedule posts for Instagram and other platforms. (I cover this in detail in my Training Program: Starter’s Guide to Mastering Personal Branding & Content Creation, specifically in Module 6. Feel free to access it here.)
Set Up Your Business Profile
A business profile offers many benefits, including access to analytics and clickable features. If you already have a personal profile, switch it to a business profile in your app settings. Ensure your profile is secure with two-factor authentication and stay updated on phishing tactics. Verification can add credibility—on platforms like Instagram, it may require meeting certain criteria.
Optimize Your Profile
Your profile is the first chance to tell your brand story. Keep branding consistent across all platforms for a unified look. Essential elements include:
- Profile name
- Username
- Profile picture (often your logo)
- Bio
- Cover/banner picture (for Facebook and LinkedIn)
- Business category/industry
- Specialties (keywords on Facebook and LinkedIn)
(I’ve included this information on page 12 of my FREE E-book for you. Feel free to download it here.)
Include Business Information
Make it easy for users to take action by providing clear business information:
- Phone number
- Website link or link tree
- Business hours (on Facebook)
- Business address
- Links to other social media platforms
- “About” section
- Call-to-action button
How to Set Up a Link Tree
A link tree, or “link in bio,” helps users find specific information about your business. Here’s how to set one up:
- Choose a link tree service like Linktree, Bio.fm, or Campsite.
- Select a username, ideally your business name.
- Add links to your services, products, specials, or blog.
- Brand your link tree with your colors, fonts, and logo.
- Add the link tree to your social media bio.
- Publish and track results with UTM links.
Develop a Content Strategy
Content is key to staying top of mind with followers and attracting new users. Consider these questions when creating content:
- Does your content align with your brand?
- Who is your target audience?
- How often should you post? Quality is more important than quantity.
- What is your audience’s search intent? Use keywords naturally in your profile name, bio, and captions.
