Unlocking the Mystery: What Makes Content Go Viral
If you’ve never had a piece of content go viral in your content creation journey, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re doing it wrong. It could simply be that you haven’t included enough of the factors that make content take off. Viral success is part science, part art, and a whole lot of persistence. While we can’t always predict what will resonate with the masses, we can certainly set ourselves up for success by leveraging tried-and-tested factors.
The 20 Factors of Viral Content
As someone deeply curious about the mechanics of social media, my journey has been filled with endless experiments. While I sometimes stick to my main accounts, I’ve also set up test accounts to try new things (and for the content that is not suitable on my main account).
One particularly interesting experiment involved posting the same content on two similar Facebook pages. To my surprise, one post racked up an astonishing 4.5 million views, while the other barely reached a few thousand. This experience confirmed that virality isn’t a perfect science.
Still, we can focus on factors that consistently increase our chances of creating viral content – Here’s the 20 Factors:
- Emotional Resonance: Tap into emotions like joy, awe, anger, or surprise to drive sharing.
- Relatability: Create content that mirrors your audience’s identity, beliefs, or daily experiences.
- Shareability: Use engaging, easy-to-share formats optimized for social platforms.
- Value-Driven: Offer practical tips, solutions, or how-tos that audiences find useful.
- Novelty: Present fresh, unique ideas to stand out in a crowded space.
- Humor: Funny content is universally appealing and highly shareable.
- Visual Appeal: Use eye-catching graphics, well-shot videos, or beautifully designed infographics.
- Controversy: Spark discussions (respectfully) by addressing bold or debatable topics.
- Timing: Capitalize on trends, news, or seasonal relevance.
- Storytelling: Share compelling narratives to create an emotional connection.
- Call to Action (CTA): Encourage your audience to like, share, or comment.
- Platform Optimization: Tailor your content to specific platforms’ formats and algorithms.
- Interactivity: Include polls, quizzes, or challenges that invite participation.
- Credibility: Ensure your content is authentic and trustworthy.
- Influencer Collaboration: Partner with influencers to amplify your reach.
- Shock Factor: Use unexpected twists to grab attention.
- Virality Hooks: Use intriguing headlines or captions that pique curiosity.
- Trend Participation: Ride the wave of viral challenges or memes.
- FOMO (Fear of Missing Out): Create urgency or exclusivity to drive immediate action.
- High-Quality Production: Invest in professional visuals and editing for maximum impact.
These factors aren’t guarantees but powerful tools to increase your odds. It’s all about combining them in ways that resonate with your audience, and your social media accounts algorithm.
Algorithm Patterns: Cracking the Code
Social media algorithms can feel mysterious—these are not human, after all. While we may not fully understand their workings, we can observe patterns. Recognizing these patterns is half the battle won.
Take my two test pages as an example. One reached 4.5 million views, while the other only managed to get thousands views. The page with 4.5 million views had about 69,000 followers, while the other had 45,000—not a huge difference. Yet, the results were worlds apart. This shows that while follower count matters, it’s not everything.
For those running viral pages with 20,000–100,000 followers, you might notice how algorithms often favor consistent posting. Virality tends to snowball—if you stop posting, the hype dies down, but if you keep pushing content, it can create a loop of ever-increasing engagement. From my experience, this was especially evident in my December experiment. I shared a post on Instagram about “The Golden Time” on 24th December. This marked the beginning of a Rebirth for one of my viral pages, which had been dormant for months. Testing on 22nd and 23rd December helped me identify patterns and confirm them before sharing my findings with others.
The Key to Virality: Experiment and Refine
In my social media journey, I’ve learned that consistency and experimentation are essential. The example of my Facebook post—one reaching millions while the other floundered—illustrates how unpredictable virality can be. But it also shows that persistence pays off. Each post, experiment, and iteration brings you closer to cracking the code for your audience. By consistently incorporating emotional resonance, relatability, and visually appealing elements into your content, you’ll be building the foundation for success.
Success often comes when you least expect it. The important thing is to keep trying and refining your approach. Treat each attempt as a learning opportunity.
